In 2007, Kathleen Hiraga pivoted from a career as a successful art director in the music and film industry, and launched Garden Organics, a culinary garden design company working with top chefs in Los Angeles and Northern California. Prior to launching the company, she apprenticed on a local California organic farm while attending classes in chemistry and garden landscaping at UCLA. As Garden Organics expanded installing gardens in mostly urban areas, rodents began infesting the gardens due to animal-based fertilizers being applied. Kathleen searched for an all-purpose fertilizer containing only plant products and discovered a void in the market. Taking matters into her kitchen-lab, she developed OrganicsRx, a line of organic plant-based fertilizers, which solved the pest problem and outperformed existing organic fertilizers. With her background as a graphic designer for MTV and Nickelodeon, she branded and marketed the OrganicsRx line of products.
Over the course of 3 years, OrganicsRx became a national retail presence, sold in over 250 retail stores including Ace Hardware, William Sonoma, Target, Whole Foods Market and West Coast grocery chains.
In 2012, Kathleen sold the retail division and in 2019, re-launched OrganicsRx to focus on formulating new plant-based products for commercial food farmers. With the advent of Covid-19, public awareness of animal waste including bone, blood meal and compost in home & garden products has proliferated. Perpetual e-coli outbreaks in spinach, lettuce and grocery produce continues to accelerate, and has led to products being pulled from shelves and traced back to water run-off from animal waste. Commercial growers searching for a safe, animal-free products are discovering OrganicsRx Supergrow and All-Purpose fertilizers, and in 2022, the company has secured manufacturing and distribution for national and international sales. Kathleen operates OrganicsRx as Founder and CEO, with co-founder Roger Newton, CEO of Esperion Therapeutics, with offices in Ann Arbor, Michigan and Monterey, California.
